Mitchell se formou como baixa tropical no Território do Norte em fevereiro, moveu-se para o leste pela região de Kimberley e ganhou força até chegar à categoria três. Após encostar na costa, o ciclone enfraqueceu a uma baixa tropical, mas a umidade remanescente alimentou novas tempestades no sul da Western Australia na segunda-feira, com mais chuva e ventos. O ciclone Genzani atingiu a costa leste de Madagascar, causando inundações, danos a centenas de edifícios e pelo menos nove mortes; foi o segundo ciclone a atingir a ilha neste ano, após Fytia. O oeste e o norte da Europa enfrentaram janeiro frio e seco, com ondas de frio extremo em Finlândia, Noruega, Lituânia e Polônia, resultando em mortes por hipotermia e interrupções como cancelamento de voos.
